Cherry and Cherry Juice
Gout Remedies

Many people have recommended cherries and cherry juice gout remedies for decades.

Cherries were first discovered to have a beneficial effect on gout in 1950. A Texan, Dr. Ludwig W. Blau, was so seriously affected by gout that he was confined to a wheelchair. The only appealing food he could find in the house was a bowl of cherries. He ate them all and found, the next day, that his gout pain and swelling was considerably reduced. He continued to eat around 6 cherries per day and was gout free until he stopped eating the cherries and his gout returned. Working with his family physician he studied twelve other gout sufferers and recorded that eating cherries helped all of them. His findings were reported in “Cherry diet control for gout and arthritis” (published in Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine Vol. 8, No. 3, 1950).

Later studies have repeatedly shown positive effects for all types of cherries and cherry juice. The studies include:

  • Jacob, Robert et al. Consumption of Cherries Lowers Plasma Urate in Healthy Women. Journal of Nutrition. 2003 Jun;133(6):1826-9.
  • Antioxidant and anti inflammatory activities of anthocyanins and their aglycon, cyanidin, from tart cherries. Journal of natural products 1999 May;62(5):802.
  • Consumption of Bing Sweet Cherries Lowers Circulating Concentrations of Inflammation Markers in Healthy Men and Women. Journal of Nutrition 2006 Apr 136: 981-986.
  • Cyclooxygenase inhibitory and antioxidant cyanidin glycosides in cherries and berries. Phytomedicine. 2001 Sep;8(5):362-9.

If you don’t like cherries, there are other natural gout remedies that might help you.

If you can’t find cherry juice or cherries in your local shops or markets, there are many sources on the Internet.

FDA Warning on Cherry Juice claims

On October 17, 2005, the FDA issued warnings to several producers of several products based on cherry juice and cherry extracts. These warnings relate to claims in advertisements and websites. They are not warning against the use of cherry juice or other cherry based products. They are warning that the claims cause the products to be classified as drugs, not foods. As drugs, the products must be submitted for appropriate testing, and labeling must meet regulations.

You can find more on this at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (fda.gov) website. So, type cherry gout (without quotes) into the search box on their website. Because the FDA continue to issue warnings and alerts. In fact, there are a total of 22 listings for cherry gout on the FDA website up to August 2017.

As with all gout remedies, if cherry juice helps your gout, then continue to drink it. But check that your planned supplier is operating responsibly.

What Do You Think About Cherry Juice Gout Cures?

Many readers have contacted me about their experiences with cherries and gout. You can read about these on your gout and cherries page. Do you have questions or opinions about cherry juice as a gout treatment? Then, share your thoughts with other gout sufferers.

Please note that whilst there is some evidence to suggest that cherry juice may help relieve the inflammation of gout, it does little or nothing to lower uric acid. Long term high uric acid is dangerous, and you must find ways to keep it to 5mg/dL or below. There are some natural products that lower uric acid, as I describe in the gout cures pages.

Is there a Safe Cherry Juice Gout Cure?

I first published this page in April 2006. So I have continued to maintain it because it is a very popular topic. But, I also have cherry juice information in the natural gout remedy area within the gout treatment section. Also, I have added several more facts about cherries and cherry juice for gout over the years.

Currently, I have flagged this page for review. Because I want to ensure all my information about cherries for gout is easy-to-find and up-to-date. However, I want to make sure that I include advice about avoiding bad suppliers. So, I will retain FDA warnings from here in my updated cherries and gout facts for different types of gout sufferer.
