Hi guys, just a quick note because I hate typing, I have stage5 renal failure and was getting LOADS of gout, sometimes in both feet at once due my acid level. My specialist at the time prescribed the usual, allopurinol and conchecine but I never used them as at 13% function I figured they would do more harm than good with that clearance. Fortunately he retired and I got a guy who is red hot . I suggested bicarb and he put me on 3 grams a day…MAGIC! I still get the occasional twinge but nothing like the agony I suffered before( you’ll know what I mean). I think it’s a high dose due my extreme condition. The only thing that concerned me is I read it can raise BP. He, the renal specialist told me it has been proved not to and my monitor appears to agree. I know that they are tryling this at my hospital as another specialist told me it was a shame I had already started as I could have been included. Speak to your doctors and suggest they try it if it’s suitable for you.only telling you about my own personal experience.good luck.

My situation is very similar to Carolyn’s. My gall bladder was removed in 1983, and I too was 31 years old. I had my first gout attack in 2016 – 33 years later – but I did not know it was gout because, like Carolyn, it started in my heals. When I was finally diagnosed last year with gout, I was told to cut out meat and alcohol, (I don’t use either), so it’s been very confusing.

Now, of course, I better understand the nature of purines and uric acid. From the very beginning though, I felt it was connected to not having a gall bladder. I still believe that to be the case. I have an almost permanent discomfort/soreness in my heals, and I’ve had two gout flareups just recently. I hope more study can go into this – and other effects of gall bladder removal.

Early signs of a gout attack for long-term sufferers

I am on Uloric and still have gout attacks once a year or so. I have noticed on two occasions that in the weeks before an attack I get mildish aches in my left foot which travel from point to point. I.e. the first day it may be on the left side of my foot and the next day in my ankle and so on. Never in the same spot twice. Eventually, it ends up in my big toe and that is when it becomes a full-blown attack. I noticed when it was in my ankle that my ankle is noticeably swollen. Nest time I will start the colchicine as soon as the pain begins anywhere. Has anybody else experienced this? My doctor says this is coincidence and a gout attack always comes on without warning.

If you’ve had gout a long time, can you tell if a gout attack is about to start? Yes, but you should not get attacks. Uloric should get uric acid safe.

I have had dozens–if not hundreds–of attacks in the 20 years that I have bee diagnosed withy gout. Like most people, it started with my big toe, but now it’s happening in my elbows and shoulders, and even as I type this I can’t move my shoulder without a lightning bolt of pain. I’ve tried all kinds of stuff, but I always like to hear the advice of different people. What supplements do you recommend for acute attacks?

    Thank you,

    John

Thanks Patrick and Keith for you replies as I’m still on the fence in pursuing the Krystexxa treatment. So far, I don’t the reason on why I haven’t been put on allopurinol, however, this may be related to the amount of non-visible Tophi I currently have in my system. At the end of the day, I don’t know if I can commit to the Krystexxa at this stage in my life and may decide to put this option on the side as a last resort. Thanks again and I’m glad that I found this Gout blog ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hello,

First time post here and I hope this note finds all my Gout suffers well.

I’m a 39 year old (Irish American) male in decent shape that apparently has an enormous amount of Gout Tophi in my system. I haven’t been put on any real Gout meds but have definitely suffered alot in the past 2 years dealing with this condition. My dr suggested that I should go on Krystexxa which is an lengthily infusion process where they inject you with an aminal protein that will seek out and digest all the uric acid/tophi throughout your system. Has anyone tried this or could you offer any advise if this experimental treatment is worth the effort? Many thanks

After my 3rd gout attack on my big toe I did not want gout to rule my life. I also did not want to take medication or change my diet. I drink the juice of 2 or 3 lemons each day or so. When I start to feel an ache in my foot I drink lemon juice and the ache goes away.

I have been having Gout issues for the last few years. I have been on all the medications so far but none help. Even on medication my Uric Acid levels still increase. My last level was 13.1 I try to be very careful with what I eat but thats not always possible since I work in public safety, The next option the doctor and I are looking at is the Krystexxa. Is there anyone else like me that the medications dont seem to work on?

Well turns out I was wrong, the mild pain was simply a prelude to the main event. Oh dear, here we go again…

I did get my UA back:
    Name 12/8/16
    Standard range
    URIC 8.8
    2.0 – 8.0 mg/dL

I talked with my Dr. today and had a prescription of for allopurinol 200 mg. I chose to take a different blood pressure medication – instead ofamiloride hydrochlorothiazide 5/50. She said we will have the blood test again in two weeks, including the CBC and WBC, for liver and kidney functions.

I only took the predinsone 20mg x 2 a day, for three days and found out that umm… no – need to take the dose for the whole 10 days as a recurrence is very high.

To night I rarely ever have a drink, eat red meat once in a while. I am 59, overweight and have been loosing weight slowly over the last 6 months. During the weight loss I eat about 3 to 5 mandarin oranges and 1/2 lb of apples a day.

    Feedback please,

    Original post from Regina:

Do I have Gout in my Big Toe?

I was going to contact my doctor regarding swelling and pain on my big toe base. I saw this forum and was wondering if it is Gout. I am not sure as the way it started.

Two nights ago, I slightly woke up and my big toe on my right foot felt like it was jammed. So I cracked it by extending (I think) I felt a snap and pain for a moment. I went back to sleep and about an hour later it started to have more pain.

I saw what I thought was a bruise around the base of the big toe on the top, along with slight swelling. I went to work and the foot started to swell in my shoe. Last night I took pictures and took more Tylenol. The Tylenol helps at least during that time. I went to bed and pretty much slept through the whole night. Yes with a blanket on me.

This morning I woke up and the swelling was worse, along with the pain. Tylenol is not helping much. The outside of the foot/big toe at the joint is more swollen along with shiny redness. Went to work and could barely walk in my shoes. If I walked on the outside of the foot I can limp along.

Came home and put ice on the foot/big toe and it seemed to make the pain worse. In the shower, I can use the shower head close to my foot with warm/hot water and there is a lot of relief. The so-called bruising that I saw earlier is gone, can’t see it now. Also, if I elevate my foot for a while most of the pain goes away.

Took a Vicodin and the pain is pretty much gone. I am now three nights into this and have two sets of pictures, including my left foot next to it. Any ideas? Gout hasn’t been a part of the history of our family.

The true question is, do to the circumstances – popping/cracking my big toe joint, is this maybe the build up of the uric acid and even though I had relief at the moment, that it was Gout after all?

Appreciating any suggestions, help. thank you, ~Regina

Having read all the Goutpal info online, i would not stop taking allopurinol. You were prescribed this for a reason and flare ups can occur. Read every strand from Goutpal to get a full picture. Good luck. A bit of painwhich may subside is far preferable to further full on gout attacks.

I’m 69 with a heart condition (diuretics, beta blockers, low EF, etc). In the last year, I’ve had my first and only two “minor” (?) flairs of gout. Somewhat uncomfortable, but I could still walk, etc. Absolutely nothing like the one time I had kidney stones. Straight Colchicine seems to have resolved both issues after (only?) 3 doses. My uric acid level is 9.1. I don’t eat organ meat, but do like shrimp and probably over use bourbon. Beer and wine I can usually pass on although I think my ‘second bout’ of gout was a result of one night with too much merlot. Saw my GP last week. He ordered Colchicine-Probenecid twice a day basically for the rest of my life. My Medicare Rx insurer just somehow automatically sent me a 90 day supply. And charged my credit card $175 freakin dollars!!!

So why didn’t I get, if anything, Allopurinol which is $14 a month without insurance at Walmart? Maybe if I’m really need to be cautious, I need more of a gout specialist than my GP. Any suggestions on a specialist? Anyone interested in some fresh, factory sealed Colchicine-Probenecid tablets (500-.5MG Tab)?

Hello I have had very bad pain for about 2-4weeks sometimes in bed for days not able to walk the pain would be out of a 10 and I would say that it would actually be a 14 it’s that bad I had a blood test for Uric acid levels and mine was 0.45mmol/L (0.20-0.46) not sure what the numbers are in the brackets but I think maybe that’s the range it should be in Iam not sure but I looked at the gout table that u have and if I was in the USA I think mine would be in the high range Iam from Australia any help would be great Iam currently on no meds and I really don’t like any of the side affects of the NSAIDS , I dont want liver failure , kidney failure , heart attack, going blind
These are just a few they are all things I can do with out .
Will just have to stick the pain out with pain meds help from Keith Taylor or anyone would be great thanks.

Since going on a low iron diet, including eating red cabbage and drinking wheat grass, my gout had gone away. My serum ferritin is now down to 132.

However, my doctor insists iron is just an inflammatory marker and cannot be the actual cause of my gout. Any suggestions how I can prove that iron is actually the cause?
