The gout foods table for fish covers key foods in the Finfish and Shellfish Products group from the USDA food database.
Note that I don’t include purines in this list. Because they are not part of the USDA database that I use for a gout-friendly foundation diet. So you should establish a healthy foundation diet first. Then you and your doctor can agree how to get your uric acid to a safe level. Once that’s in place, you might get marginal uric acid benefits by changing some fish for lower purine seafood. In which case, the low purine fish list and the moderate purine fish list will help you.
Also, note that those lists are followed by seafood lists. But there is no very low purine fish list. However, you can use the very low purine seafood list.
Fish You Can Eat With Gout
Before you use the tables, it is important to understand how they work. Please read my Gout Foods Tables Introduction. You also need to read the Gout Foods guidelines to understand the right approach to gout diet. In a nutshell, you need to start from a generally healthy diet. Do not worry about purines or other things that you may have heard about certain food or drink. Adopt a healthy diet first, then, if you have a gout treatment plan, tweak the diet to match that plan. Your gout treatment plan does not need to be based on medicines. It is your goals for managing uric acid and painful inflammation that matter. Gout diet might be all you need, or you might need support from gout medicines. Whichever way you go, it must start with a healthy diet.
There is no single fixed plan for a healthy diet. You have to choose what is right for you. Plans based on Harvard nutrition guidelines, Meditteranean diet, and alkalizing diet are three good choices, but there are others. If you need help choosing a healthy eating plan for gout, ask in the forum. Whichever plan you choose, fish is an important source of protein. Generally speaking, seafood is better than red meat. The gout foods table for fish will help you choose foods that best balance your favorite foods with healthy nutrition.
Fish, as a source of protein, should never be more than a quarter of what you eat. Fish based meals should be balanced by equal quantities of whole grains, and twice as much fruit and veg. The proportions will vary according to your diet plan. Here is what Harvard guidelines say about protein:
Choose fish, poultry, beans, and nuts; limit red meat and cheese; avoid bacon, cold cuts, and other processed meats.

The table is sorted in GoutPal Index order, where my Index is based on the best of all relevant nutrients. Do not worry that all fish, except raw octopus are lower than the Standard. This is expected. You need a variety of foods with some lower than Standard, and some higher. As long as your average for all food is not too low, you have a healthy diet.

Is Salmon Bad for Gout?
First, I cannot find any specific research about the effects of salmon on gout or uric acid. Except that intravenous treatment with salmon calcitonin probably reduces uric acid. But that has nothing to do with eating salmon. And very little to do with currently available uric acid treatment. So let's move on to see how salmon fits into our gout management in the context of the fish food group.
Now, I'm aware that most gout sufferers don't have a dietary plan for their fish consumption. So your best bet is to ask your doctor how much fish you should consume. Then decide how much of that fish allowance you should devote to salmon. Currently, I don't have a template to help you in the shared decision-making processes for fish consumption. But if you want me to start one, please tell me using your feedback options above.
As I've said, there is no indication that salmon is particularly bad for gout. So I include it in American and Mediterranean Gout Foundation Eating Plans during Gout Progression Phase 1: Gout Causes.
If you've progressed to Gout Progression Phase 5: Start Uric Acid Cure, you may be considering a Uric Acid Eating Pattern as your approach. Or incorporate dietary improvements in support of a medical approach. Either way, your salmon consumption remains relevant. As you build on your foundation eating pattern to incorporate purine control and uric acid blood tests.
