I have recently re-injured  my right knee (which has been the site of a chronic knee condition).   In addition to this, I have suffered from gout 2 times in the last year and a half.  Both flair ups were around 7 to 10 days and involved my big toe and then all my toes.

This flair up has lasted 3 weeks now, I have evened my diet out, utilizing ibuprofin, soaking the foot, drinking cherry juice, you name it I am consistently doing it.  This flair up is in all toe joints, outside of the foot and my ankle.  I am losing my mind at this point and just don't know what to do.

Any input would help folks.  I appreciate it.

What you need to know is your Serum Uric Acid level and if it is high, lower it by taking Allopurinol or some other similar medication after you know why your SUA levels are high.

Ibuprofen helps only till a point, Colchicine is generally better suited for gout pain( if you are able to take it without side effects. Im my case ibuprofen prescription dose of 800 mg had more side effects than Colchicine).

You can find more details on this forum on Uric Acid numbers, Allopurinol and Colchicine.

My experience is that non medication way of managing Gout has limited success. Once you are on the right medication, you will be in much better shape.

Hang in there. It took 2 months in my case to diagnose it was gout as I had toe injury which triggered all this stuff. I kept on getting the toe pain and the swelling never went away. After I started Allopurinol and Colchicine, the things improved dramatically.

Utube is right- you need to know your SUA figure and I suspect it's high.

Anyway, guesses do no good -and neither will lifestyle changes do much short term. 3 weeks is plenty long enough for an attack and really you need further medical advice as to why you have got such sudden severe attacks.

If you are getting injuries maybe you're over stressing joints or suffering fatigue on top of gout weariness.

Either way, you must get to grips with it medically as advice here can only assist -not replace this need. Many co-factors can affect follow up, like your age,Blood Pressure, BMI and diet- but SUA test is a must.

I use to get gout every two or three weeks and last for 1 to 2 weeks. My Chiro said to try to stop eating peanuts and peanut butter. I have not taken a pill of any kind or any prevention since…no atacks for 5 weeks now……have started eating eveything, drinking beer, seafood, liver…no attacks………it is wonderful…..hope this helps….

I had the very same experience and there was no gout attack for almost a year, but then it got me now for a 2 week period. Did the Blacl bean broth thing with a little variation and hope it help to keep the gout away. I am also researching the effects of an Ayurvedic remedy and will post any information that may be of help.

Good luck with all your home remedies and food avoidance techniques.

Remember though, if and when they don't work any longer, that the mainstays work: allopurinol to contro uric acid and colchicine to control pain.

Ibuprofen for me in pain relieving quantities DESTROYS my stomach with permanent gastritis…I find naproxyn (Aleve) much easier. But to stop a long bout with gout, nothing beats colchicine.

thanks for all the input.  I use the VA healthcare system and can't get in till the 28th of this month.  Therefore, checking my uric acid levels can't happen til then.  I am going to try and get some test strips from a pharmacy and I did take plenty of pictures of my “troll foot”.  It seems to be subsiding at this point, so I am at least doin a little better pain and swelling wise.

I love this website and have found it ultra helpful in answering my questions.  Again thanks for the input folks gotta keep on keepin on.

Make sure that you bring the pictures of your foot with you on the 28th. If that attack subsides the pictures will prove that you aren't just “whisting Dixie.” The VA doctors can be thick browed troglodytes.

    teaguesailor12,

Your gout attacks sound just like mine. I’m taking Allopurinol (100 mg once a day)  for the past week and my SUA was 6.5 the last time it was tested. Don’t get discouraged, get this gout managed and under control!
