How much colchicine can you take?
September 17, 2009 at 6:50 am #5644cjeezyParticipantIn an hour? a day? a week? a month?a lifetime?

The other thing to take account of is drug /drug interactions and Statins, commonly used for high chloresterol/triglicerides is one of these such, that react badly when co-administered.
I have experienced this- but not the more serious effects possible , as I ceased quickly due to gastric effects.
Side effects are neglected/understated (for obvious reasons)- often to the detriment of the unsuspecting user.

For an ACUTE attack that has persisted for several days I follow the dosing maximum given on my original packing slip with my first Rx: 2 to start, then one and hour to a maximum of 16, pain cessatiion, or serious diarrhea. If you start immediately upon feeling the pain 2 or 4 should do the trick. I can attest from personal experience that one does not QUITE die from taking 22 pills in a day, but I don't recommend it.

But seriously, the high dose regime to kill the acute attack is fine. It is NOT fine to ignore the long term, which as zip2play quite rightly says, needs uric acid lowering treatment. The only way to manage gout pain is to manage uric acid numbers.
