I've had gout for about 10 years, and a series of incompetant doctors prescribes Naproxen for the symptoms but never put me on allopurinol. ?This last year my frequency and severity of attacks has gotten much worse, so I changed doctors and was put on Colchicine and Allopurinol (Colchicine for a month to prepare me, and now Allopurinol daily). ?I'm now getting a lot more attacks, which I understand is normal in the first few months of Allopurinol.

    ?

So I still have plenty of Naproxen from my old prescription and Colchichine from my new one, plus I have non-prescription Advil. ?When I get an attack, I should keep taking the Allopurinol, right?

    ?

Is it safe to also take Colchicine while the attack is going on? ?Naproxen? ?Advil? ?Should I take more than one of these at once?

    ?

I've been taking 2 doses of Colchicine on the days that I have an attack, but it hasn't had much effect. ?I was thinking of adding Advil as often as recommended on the box to this – is that safe?

Joe- The AlloP with added Colchicine at attacks should do the trick. 2 x 0.6mg is not going to do this though, unless your attacks are really?only twinges!

It's not for?me to advise your treatment?- so check with your Doc about co-admin of meds. I think Advil has a low incidence of side effects conpared to other popular pain killers- this is not true of Colchicine but taken for short time scales, can be worth the risk. Many docs nowadays are wary of?this old med.?and also the cost has rocketed[ for the next 3 years] due to Pharma wrangling with FDA [in the US]

Basic questions- what are your SUA readings, AlloP dose [*could be too low]?and are you really upping your water intake and watching trigger foods/alcohol intake of?ANY amount?

Bear in mind these 'leaving?pains' are to be expected, for maybe some months, with a backlog of urate in your system -but they, hopefully,?should ease off in severity.

[Yes, it's frustrating that this is a repeat of many sufferers experience- due to neglect]

    Joe,

    ?

Sorry you got a bunch of quacks who manhandled you all those years.

I wouldn't mix Naproxyn and Advil but either could be added to allopurinol and colchicine. I would choose the Naproxyn because it is a lot easier on MY stomach. But your tolerace and results might be different so choose the one you like better.

Like trev said, 2 colchicine is not much to stem an attack once it has gotten hold…it?MIGHT work at the first twinge of an attack 4 would be better (over 3 hours.) I think the absolute?minimum for an established attack is 6 pills over 5 hours.

How much allopurinol (I think 300 is best)…what is your serum uric acid?

I'm on 300 mg of Allopurinol (I saw a bunch of posts complaining about people starting at 100 mg – my new doctor started me right at 300, so I guess that's good). ?My Colchicine prescription says “1 0.6 mg tablet twice daily”, but I just realized that was for the month long daily dose before starting on allopurinol, so I'll ask the doctor about upping that for acute attacks. ?Thanks for the advice!

I'm waiting for the results of my latest blood test so I don't have my SUA readings right now. ?I can never get a straight answer on what foods actually trigger gout – every site I go to has a different list! ?I just went to one that said “dairy products” – I have never heard that one before! ?I avoid red meat and alcohol, that's about it. ?(BTW, does pork count as red meat or white meat?) ?I think I'm supposed to be avoiding fish too, but I like sushi too much, and it's never seemed to cause a problem except when I really overdo it and eat a TON of fish in one meal.
