    Started last Tuesday.

Top of foot near base of ankle.

Swelling from ankle to toes on top of foot. Swelling has subsided by 50%.

    50MG Indocin 3 x a day since Tuesday.

    Questions:

Swelling extends across whole top of foot out to the 2 and 3 toe. These toes feel weird. Are swollen. Burining feeling from underneath. Some numbness. Could swelling affect circulation? Perm damage to these toes?

Indocin seems like it doesnt work in this case. 3 x day.

I finally got an appt with reg doctor. Am wondering if should find a rhematologist instead?

    Thanks,

    Rob

The trouble with feet is they are made from many bones. This means many joints for gout to attack. Gout pain is mainly due to inflammation as the immune system reacts with uric acid crystals.

Secondary pain can come from nerve and circulation restriction resulting from the swelling.

Some of the hings that help me are:

    • Keep feet warm – bedsocks are not very romantic, but when you’re in that much pain, you probably don’t care.
    • Try to keep walking. It hurts, but it is surprising how quickly you can walk through the pain barrier if you persevere. I find gout attacks go much quicker if I keep mobile.
    • When resting, try to keep feet above the heart.
    • If you have to drive, or sit at a desk, keep taking regular breaks and walk round for a while. Drinking plenty of water not only helps your gout directly, but also causes frequent toilet trips – a chance to keep those feet moving.

    Hey, @robpp – it’s been a while.

I was wondering how you are progressing with your gout.

I’ve learned a lot since my last response here, especially about the importance of personal gout treatment plans. It is important to have short term plans that stop gout pain. It is equally important to have long term plans to stop gout from ever returning.

I hope I can help you control gout properly so you do not suffer again. Please let me know how I can help you best.

Keith …..right on point. It took me a few years but found out how to stop attack and pain quickly and continue with a treatment that works for me so far.

    Thanks Paul.

Can I assume you are @robpp ? I’m a bit confused by name and email differences. I can change these if you are likely to call back here from time to time.

I was prompted to give a shoutout because you are actually the oldest member here. That’s oldest as in longest-serving, not necessarily oldest by age! I’m going through the old forum slowly, and summarizing earlier discussions, as part of my 10 year celebrations.

You registered on May 5, 2008 5:37 pm. The website is older than that, but old records from the first forum software could not be carried forward. If you don’t need my gout support service any more, I’ll close the account. When I summarize this, I’m surprised to see that the advice I gave over seven years ago, is still valid for most people. In 2015, I’m focusing on a more personal approach, so nowadays, I would look for personal feedback on the 4 points I mentioned, with one or two other significant points for gout pain control.

I would be really interested in more details of how you learned how to stop the gout pain, and take control, if you have time to share them.
