So as not to take an excellent discussion off-topic, I'll use this forum to mention my reaction to recent posts in the black bean broth gout cure discussion.

I was feeling good about my recent weight loss until I read how one gouty friend proclaims his regained teenage profile at 160 pounds. Another gouty friend pips it at 155 pounds.

Makes my 210 pounds (15 flabby UK stones) look positively grotesque – as confirmed by the mirror in the corner.

Am I disheartened? Am I dismayed? Too right I am.

Not reallySmile, for the good news is that it's a whole 40 pounds less than the hulking New Year's Eve GoutPal. Against some excellent gout advice (my ownWink), I reduced at almost 4 pounds per week – twice my recommended maximum – with some weeks even more. Surprisingly, no GoutPal joints were harmed during the execution of this weight loss program.

The first few weeks were clouded with some gout flares, but not worse than I'd been suffering during late 2009. I haven't had a flare for about two months since weight stabilized at 210 pounds +/- 2. I'd like to say that this was due to being inebriated for 3 months, insensible to pain, but the truth may be more related to a sensible diet linked tightly with sensible exercise.

I do not think I am out of the woods yet, especially as I still have visible tophi on the elbows. Over the next few weeks, encouraged by the fact that exercise is now much easier, and me in swimming attire much less frightening, I aim to lose a few more pounds.

More of the story, with practical tips, coming to a gout website near you soon.

40 lbs loss!!! Your achievement is spectacular! Surprised

My weight at 155 lbs is nothing to crow about because I did not do anything, but just maintaining it – with my dear wife constantly poking on my little paunch  and imposing a rationing on my favourite juicy meat dishes whenever I got closer to 160lbs.Cry  My target is at 150 lbs +/-.  Based on our standards I am classified as “obese”Frown.

    GoutPal…..GoutGal here! Cool

Congratulations on a wonderful weight loss…… As you may remember, GoutGal is relatively new at this GoutGame, GoutPal Laugh

But, I'm pretty convinced that weight loss is something we all should do, along with the compiling and following lists of foods, meds, exercise techniques and other. My “other” is massaging my feet, toes, ankles with Emu oil. Whatever works, huh?

As a Gal, I started out at a hefty 164 lbs. at 5'4″ in February, 2010. Now, I'm 140 and the last time I looked, still 5'4''. No attacks since the major one of the left toe on 2/18/10 a very bad one, the right toe on 4/17/10 not as bad, and a very mild 1-2 day ankle one on 5/7/10. With the help of this Forum I've learned so much. It's a wonderful support group.

    Good Job!

I want a Mince Pie, but I didn't eat it all! Laugh

Congrats on the weight loss!  Just by eating healthy, I've been dropping 1.5 to 2 lbs a month.  Nothing drastic, but I'm also getting no exercise because of my gout.  I'm just trying my hardest not to balloon up while I'm so inactive.

Hey, this weight loss will only help your future battles with gout and that is great!

Shepherds (or cottage) pie is now a deliciously different affair. The lamb (or beef) mince is replaced by turkey mince (gobblers pie?), mixed with plenty of diced veg. Half the mashed potato topping is replaced by sweet potato and/or swede & carrot mix, with low fat creme fraiche.

with a pint or two of Guiness!

Beer replaced by red wine or cider – a nod to the ACV guys, but I drink it before it soursSmile

and continued success with the T-Shirt biz.

THAT T-shirt was my Xmas gift from my loving family. Bastards! (doesn't apply to GoutMom, bottom right, very much in the dark)

Well GP you did it, no one else, despite Jamie Olivers influence Wink Since you are less then you were I wonder if Al Gore will give you some carbon credits also LOL! Seriously just wonderful and I am also serious about the T-shirt biz. Start a poll here maybe we can all contribute ideas for some apparel to be comrades in arms with the gout and get advertised also. Bat the idea around and let us know! Cheers.

If I am not wrong, many of our gout friends do have a weight problem. Gaining weight has a lot to do with the amount and things that we eat (INPUT) and how we dispose of the “extra” calories taken in (OUTPUT). As I had mentioned, “If we eat like a “King”, we will inevitable end up with the “King of Diseases” – GOUT.

I do understand that it's always easier said than done.  It would need a lot of determination, drive and perseverence. Much also depends on whether we believe it's going to work for us or not.  Should there be an iota of doubt, it will never work for us because we will find the slightest excuse/reason that it's not effective. It is all in our MIND.

When I was diagnosed with NASH (nonalcoholicsteatohepatitis) over 3 years ago, I immediately adjusted my diet and lost almost 20lbs, so I'm at 180-185lbs and I'm 6'1″ tall, so I'm not overweight. Losing the weight helped me lower my liver enzymes but it didn't seem to have any effect on my gout, but who knows how bad my gout would be if I added those pounds back? I eat a vegetarian diet and no alcohol of any kind, but now I'm cutting sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup out of my diet to see what effect that has. Soon, I'll be living on crackers and water!

Forgive me if I've missed it somewhere Art, but I haven't seen you mention your uric acid levels.

Are you saying you lost 20lbs and it had no effect on uric acid, or it had no effect on gout pain?

With a gout diet, it's as much about what you do eat as what you leave out – balance is EVERYTHING.
