which type of medication is best (won't knock my gout into a flareup)
I can not remember is it asprin that is on the not so good list or is it aleve. I've both in the medicine cabinet. I seldom take anything but this headache has been there for two days now. its a stress headache from lack of sleep and aniety over hubby being in hopsital ermergency for past two days.
ciao Ouch
March 7, 2010 at 9:02 pm #7887UtubeliteParticipantI think asprin is not good for gout as I remember having read at many places. Aleve many take to relieve the gout pain, so that should be fine.
I generally take Advil or Mortin(Ibuprofen) as it relieves headache also and is good for gout as well.

Ubelite is correct, as far as I know. Naproxen (prescription), the equivalent of Aleve (over the counter), is which I have been taking for >25 years for pain and inflammation control (in my case: Gout.)

Stay away from aspirin with gout unless you can commit to taking about 16 a day…a real stomach punch.
Low doses of aspirin retain uric acid, huge doses dump it readily.
March 8, 2010 at 3:00 pm #7891ouchParticipantthanks all headache is now down to reasonable level. I had some Advil at the back of medicine cabinet as well. so that's what I ended up taking.
taped up note on inside of the door not to take the asprin just incase I forget or one of the kids fetches me something when I'm not well.
ciao OUCH
off to hospital again. They may release hubby this afternoon if CT scans are ok.

Zip,
You just made MY day!!!
My G.P. for 10 years (1996-2007), a university medical professor in Gerontology, made me take baby aspirin for 10 years (and I continued for two more.) He knew about my gout, to the point that he called other doctors to look at my uric aid coming out of my toe which none had ever seen in their careers. My G.P. was a doctor for 35-40 years.
I did quit taking it about 2-3 months ago when I read here on the forum that it wasn't good for gout, however, I did NOT know that it actually retained uric acid. No wonder, that my gouty life got goutier in the last 12 years than in the prior 15 years b/4 the ASPIRIN AGE.

There is that little wrinkle called a fatal heart attack to consider.
From most of what I read the consensus is that the TEEENY doses of aspirin that are enough, or ALMOST enough, to prevent platelet clumping and clot formation on our coronary and brain arteries won't retain much urate. But then I've read that the smaller the dose the more the effect on urate retention. (I know, I know, who to believe!)
So it seems one might have little to fear from 80 mg. aspirin/day.
But then I have also read that a third of people are NOT protected against platelet clumping with only 80 mg. aspirin.
For me, with proven plaque deposits in a couple arteries and a stent in my right coronary artery, I take 650 mg. aspirin/day and I assume the allopurinol will sort it all out. I'd rather risk a sore foot than a casket. So far so good avoiding both.
(So I like my booze including regular overdoses of beer, I love my meat and fish, I take copious aspirin…any wonder why I think allopurinol is a wonder drug given to man directly from the hand of Zeus?)
