I've “officially” had gout for just over a year, but I've really had it for several years, but didn't know what the heck was wrong… I have an old (1974) Porsche 911 Targa that I've owned for 8 years. I really enjoy the car but for the past year I haven't been able to drive it very much due to the very stiff clutch pedal and the pain it causes my toe after driving even just a little. There isn't any way to reduce the clutch pedal effort as my mechanic friend and I have tried everything we can think of. I've just started Allopurinol this week and I take Aleve (Naproxen) for pain, but the clutch pedal really aggravates the toe and starts the “several days of throbbing and burning” routine that I've learned to dread.

I guess I shouldn't complain or whine because many others have had much worse happen to them, but I'm at the point where I'm going to sell the car because I really can't drive it as much as I want and the pain after driving the car makes me miserable for several days.

Gout really does change your life, I guess…..

Don't sell your car till you give Allop a chance to do it's magic. If you really like the car you better hold off or you'll be sorryCool LIMPY

    Limpy,

Thanks. I drove the Porsche last night and today I'm really paying for it! I've only been taking the Allopurinol for a week, but the clutch is so stiff that it takes about 50lbs to depress it to the floorboard. Even if the drug works, I don't know how I'll be able to enjoy driving the car… We'll see…

    Limpy,

I'll have to tell my wife she needs to start working out! I didn't drive the old Porsche yesterday and my toe pain is not bad at all. I'll drive it today and see what happens…

    azasadny,

Gout must have changed you life a lot and terribly so – especially for such an active person like you.  How's your Mazdaspeed3? I am sure your interest in shooting with your collection of guns has remained intact.

As for myself, gout really did affect my life terribly. I had to put on hold some of my activities as I was terribly “disabled” – especially in mobility. Now I feel good again as I have kept gout at bay, so far.

Welcome to GP Interactive!  With your wide knowledge and varied interests, we shall look forward to your sharing and contributions.

metamorph, Thanks for the kind note! I'm doing my best to control and manage my gout, but it has affected my driving enjoyment as both of my cars have manual transmissions, but the Porsche's clutch is very stiff, much more so than the 2010 MazdaSpeed3. I love the Speed3, I've got 19k miles on it and I've owned it for a year. Before this car, I had a 2007 MazdaSpeed3, but I sold it to a friend so I could buy the 2010 model. I drove my wife, daughter and Golden Retriever to a state park to visit friends yesterday (40 mile round-trip) and my toes is throbbing today. I just took 220mg of Aleve (Naproxen) and it's helping.

Once winter srts in, I'll start going to the pistol/rifle range again and I reload my own ammo. Those are fairly “sedentary” activities and my gout doesn't stop me from enjoying them. I also play the drums at church and the gout does affect my ability to enjoy that activity. All in all, I guess I'm doing pretty well, but I'm learning more everyday and I'll continue to fight gout and I'll eventually win!

I hope you're doing well and managing your gout!

A guy is coming over today to show his wife the Porsche and get her “OK” to buy it. He's driven it and really likes it, but wants his wife to see it first. It's painful to sell the car, but it's more painful to press the clutch pedal!!

The guy deceided to buy a newer Porsche with air conditioning (!), so I still have the car. I've been on 300mg of Allopurinol for a week so far and I'll drive the car again this weekend. Hopefully, my toe won't throb after I'm done driving…

I really understand you. Since 2003 I've suffered gout on my left knee (other joints also but the worst is my knee), so using the clutch is just impossible during a gout attack. This year I had an attack that started on March and progress all the way up to June, my rheumathologist forwarded me to a knee orthopedist. The orthopedist suggested an arthroscopy to check the knee and do a clean up of crystals.

I couldn't use my car for these period and decided to buy an automatic. It's been 3 months since the synovectomy and clean up of my knee, also my doctor put me on 300 allopurinol, and now I can drive again my stick car.

I never had driven a stick car with clutches but I can understand and endorse your point. I had taken brand new BMW X5 4.8i and a month after that got the right big toe injury followed by gout. The bay area traffic in California is really bad during peak hours. It is more stop than go. Applying sudden breaks with my right foot was very painful. I was not able to drive for few months.
It took me almost 6 months before I could drive it again( due to double whammy of fractured toe with gout).
It made me so much averse to X5 that I finally disposed it off and suffered loss of USD 10K plus( I bet Gout is very costly affair mentally, physically and financially). I have now taken new model of BMW 550i and that seems to be much lighter on my toe. I hope it stays that way.
If applying clutch means applying pressure, it would be very painful I guess.

How has gout changed my life?

It has made it necessary to take a pill every morning…300 mg. allopurinol.

Fortunaltey when I had my gout attacks I was driving a 25 foot long Oldsmobile with a 454 cu inch engine that drove itself. All I had to worry about was avoiding icebergs as she crusied along and I sat at the captain's table. “All ahead full!”

After allopurinol I got a 5 speed Hyundai Excel (blecccch!) and shifted with alacrity.
