OK, so I posted last week and felt that I had made it through the woods.  The constant pain that I had felt in my wrist passed and was relegated to pain when I tried to bend the joint.  That lasted about 3-4 days but now the constant pain is back.  No swelling this time but the pain is constant and has moved to the palm of my hand, the knuckle in my index finger and what feels like the inside of the bone in my forearm (both the forearm and palm feel almost like they’re bruised).

    Is this normal???

I know from reading a lot of the postings that the same questions seem to always be asked; so… Yes, it’s gout (the doctor drew fluid from my wrist).  UA unknown, no blood test yet (doing that on 9/29).  The first doctor wanted the rheumatologist to treat me so all I have are some pain killers (no Colchicine).

It’s gotten to the point where I’m yelling at my girlfriend and my dog for no reason (and I really like my dog… yes, I love my girlfriend too).  Amputation seems like a viable option at this point.  When does it end?!?!?!?!?

    It's hard to give specifics.

My comments: A few days is not a long time in goutology!

It can feel like broken bones- in fact more painful, in my experience.

It can also feel like an infection, as the bodys' reaction is the same- in fact worse than normal.

The mental stress of unusual pain and peoples lack of understanding on this make things worse- without doubt.

PS : Your dog probably does understand- but has no way of helping… apart from those sad eyes 😉

It can go on for many weeks or even months- but you know from posts here, the least painful; and most sure route is drug therapy, applied over time, looking out for adverse reactions,yes- but there is a way through.

You will feel better when you get some numbers on your blood tests- worry is not helping but is perfectly normal. You are being listened to, this is not always the case!

    Constant pain is extremely wearing.

I find Co-Codamol type painkillers the best, [the soluble ones] but keep doses as low as possible.

I never hit the limits on dosage , whatever the pain. Some remanant pain is inevitable at this stage.

    Bear up!

One would have thought that at the time they took the trouble to aspirate joint fluid they'd have taken a vial of blood for a uric acid test. It defies logic they did one without the other.

Treatment of choice is colchicne and allopurinol but you need an Rx for them, so why not call your dictor and ask him to call in a prescription for colchicne.

Second choice, but far behind, is probably indomethacin, again Rx. If you are in the U.S. you can buy a bottle of naproxyn without Rx and give it a try. Do NOT take aspirin

I guess you can try some of the old nostums if desperate: cherries, a couple tespoons of baking soda each day, black bean broth. .

I called the doctor this morning and requested the he call in the Rx.  Appreciate the response.  I know this goes without saying, but.. this really sucks!  I've broken bones, blown my knee out, ruptured tendons, thrown my back out, etc, etc… but this really sucks.  I mean, two @#%$! weeks of non-stop *!#@^ pain.  Give me a break already.  My girlfriend just doesn't understand how I can “always” be in pain (kind of pisses me off – like I want this), I'm tired all the time because I don't sleep any more.  WTF?!?!?

OK, sorry about that, just needed to vent.  I'm going straight to the pharmacy as soon as the doc calls the colchicine in.  Hopefully that helps.

    Thanks again fellas!

Quite a coincidence…I'm also waiting for my doctor to get back to me about calling in 90 colchicne…my pharmacist has ONE bottle left so I hope the doctor doesn't fiddle around.

I hope you don't run into a shortage in Denver.
