    Hello,

i would liek to ask GP if he has had any attacks after getting his levels down and keeping them down with continued medication. For me, I think am almost out of the woods with this but after a couple of good days I get a day like today (left foot and left toe with pain and limping – but no PODAGRA) out of nowhere.

My last uric acid reading was 5.1 which i know still needs lowering. Iwould just like to have hope in the thought that this might all be over if I am vigilant with regular blood tests and lowering my UA levels with proper dosage of meds. I have been taking 300mg allopurinol/day and it has been doing the trick – just not as fast as I'd like.

    Thanks for any hope/insight gents,

just not as fast as I'd like.

That's often the way with gout. Remember that each past attack has laid down urate crystals that  can play hide and seek with the immune system. It sometimes takes a while to resolve those that are capable of “seeking” and make sure those that hide stay hidden.

Just keep taking the 300 mg. allopurinol and if you maintain in the 5.1 area, you will soon see an end to almost all the foot pain.

But remember, 5 years from now some tophus that is hidden might start seeking but you're not likely to suffer a full blown podagra ever again. Eveen the “limpies” will diminish to twinges.

    Sorry…

GP= Gout Pal. I don't know how to address you since I don't know your name.

Thanks Zip2play, for your advice…just looking for hope and maybe a light at the end of the tunnel. I have an 18-month old boy and a girl on the way and just want to be able to run around with them rather than be the pitiful guy who can't keep up. Before this I ran and went to the gym and was in fairly decent shape for a 41 year-old.

I lost my father in May. I found an article in my frantic search for answers – at this point I have read almost all the content relating to gout that the  Internet has to offer. The article, more like a professional paper,  related that stressful events can trigger the PODAGRA and gout. I know that his passing qualified as a stressful event, since I had always wanted my son to know him and took the loss hard. Also, during this time, my brothers and I drank and ate copious amounts of things never listed in any diet book. The paper also related that certain personality types like those who are leaders and those who  work and play harder than average are more susceptible. The paper,  written by MD's, also made a connection between all the various notable gout sufferers over the years. I will try to find it and post it here.

sirlimpsalot, I'd recommend you talk to your doctor about moving to 400mg allopurinol for a few months.

This will speed the period for getting rid of old crystals. After 6 months without a flare, you can then move to a maintenance dose to keep you round the 6 mark

I've seen reasonably convincing claims to correlations between high uric acid and high IQ. Perhaps uric acid is either a product of excessive brainwork or else helps the transfer of insformation between neurons.

Yes, many of the most stellar names in history have suffered gout.

I have no doubt that stress and anxiety can bring on an attack of acute gout for those “on the edge.” And since we, as humans, cannot avoid stress and anxiety it is wise to keep serum uric acid levels as far from “the edge” as practicable. I'll bet last Fall saw a HUGE increase in gout attacks among those working on Wall Street. 😀

I will try to relocate the paper and will surely talk to my doctor too. He, however, doesn't even know I have upped the dose on my own to 300mg's. – He thinks I am still at 100. I'll break it to him gently and hope his ego isn't too bruised.

    Thanks for the thoughtful posts

    Ouch,

That's the longest copy and paste I've ever  seen. It makes the page take forever to load. Perhaps a link would suffice?

Gee I hope allopurinol usage doesn't lower out chances of success in worldly pursuits. 😀 😀 😀

Here's the link for gout and stress (includes a link to the full report on gout and stress).

Remember guys, if you are searching for gout info, include GoutPal in your search terms, and you'll probably find what you are looking for (and if not – I want to know)Smile
