I'm full of questions today! 🙂 Can someone explain what the differences are between uricosic meds and Allopurinol/Probenecid? When should Uricosic meds be used instead of the latter?

Allopurinol inhibits uric acid production, by suppressing an enzyme called xanthine oxidase. Useful for over-producers, but still effective for under-excretors.

Uricosurics, of which Probenecid is one, along with Sulfinpyrazone and others, help under-excreters. You can identify if you are an under-excreter by taking a 24-hour urine test. You collect all your urine over a 24 hour period, and some lucky bastard get's to test it.
