It’s been a long time since anyone discussed TENS machines for gout pain relief.
Even longer since the first inkling that electric treatments might help gout:
In 153 AD, the Roman physician Scribonius Largus wrote ?For any type of gout a live black torpedo should, when the pain begins, be placed under the feet. The patient must stand on a moist shore washed by the sea and he should stay like this until his whole foot and leg up to the knee is numb. This takes away present pain and prevents pain from coming on if it has not already arisen?
I’m not sure how relevant that is to today’s gout treatments. I’m also unsure how effective TENS is for gout pain. I had inconclusive results when I tried it. Of course, I don’t need gout pain relief now, but for those seeking non-pharmaceutical relief for pain, it’s worth a look.
Today’s news is that TENS just got easier. NeuroMetrix have announced a wearable form of TENS machine they call Quell. It’s available Over The Counter, complementing their prescription device called Sensus.
