- A gout attack is the period of gout when your immune system responds to uric acid crystals in your body. The crystals are there all the time, and without treatment, they will grow to damage your joints, kidneys, heart, skin, and other organs. This is important because it is useless to simply treat gout pain. To make sure gout attacks never happen again, you need treatment to lower uric acid, as well as treat the pain.
