    Hi

I get twinges and general soreness in my feet from time to time.

Also get a twinge in my big toe but very rarely.

    I take Alopurinol 300.

I always think an attack is imminent but it never develops any further.

I think its where my feet have been damaged by the uric acid crystals.

Do you take Colchicine when you experience these twinges?

No I dont take Colchicine as they are never bad enough.

They are only very slight twinges just letting me know its there  and to be careful.

    Hi

I do spin classes twice a week and go to the gym about 4 times a week total.

I have been ok but it used to affect me badly. I take 300 Alopurinol.

I drink loads of water before during and after working out .

My dr told me that my uric acid level was low enough to increase my exercise program.

I think its very important that you get your dosage right.

Yes it very well could be the tiredness effecting my vision.  It's not blurry, it just takes a second or two longer for everything to focus (mainly small detailed things).  Also, Allop is the only Rx I'm taking

just hang in there it does get better but slowly

    All the best

    Hi Pagey,

I didn’t really skip a dose I just took it at 7pm instead of 7am. Have you noticed a hard time focusing on things with your vision?

    Hi

No my vision has always been ok.

I know when I started on it I was very tired and that affects your vision .

I think you should be careful as I said not to blame everything on Alopurinol.

I am much better than I was a year ago ,thankfully.

    Good luck

I seem to sleep very heavy and dream a lot now.

I definately dont sleep as well as I didd before Alopurinol

That's interesting.  I've also noticed that my dreams are just plain WILD lately! and I do sleep pretty heavily …except for the fact I have to go to the bathroom about 2 times a night due to all the water I drink during the day!

I had a follow up with my Dr yesterday.  He kept assuring me that the fatigue was not due to the drug because he's never had anyone complain of it (interesting).  I skipped my dose yeserday morning and felt pretty good, I took 200mg before bed and feel a bit better today.  I want to also ask everyone here because I forgot in my original post, but has anyone else noticed that their vision is just a bit off (like it takes a second longer for things to focus at time)? I hate to keep badgering my Dr and sounding like a hypochondriac, but not sure about this symptom.I want to stay on this drug and so does my Dr but how serious should side effects be b4 you stop taking it? I know Uloric will run me about $60/mo or $150 for 3 months but I don’t really want to test a newer drug. Any input?

    Hi

you  sound so much like me.

I thought that every time I felt slightly unwell it was caused by Alopurinol.

I went to the Drs for check ups and he always showed me that there was another reason for what ever it was was wrong.

For example I had terrible aches on the top of my foot it turned out that I had torn a ligament.

So bottom line is not to get paranoid about it .Its doing you more good than harm.

I dont think you should skip a dose either ,not a good idea.

Thanks for all of the responses everyone.   Pagey, how long before the majority of your side effects went away?  I had the palpitations at first, but they went away. I expected the aches, however the fatigue is just plain awful…Can't even go to the gym right now.  Even standing up gets me a little light headed at times.  Also, I'm starting to think its possible that my shortness of breath is caused by quitting smoking after 16+ years. I quit at the exact same time I started this Rx.  Anyways I just wanted to see if anyone else had these symptoms because when I looked online the feelings I have all say “rare side effects” and to “contact your doctor…yadda yadda”  I'll try and wait it out another week and see how I feel.

    Hi

My aches lasted for over a year but that was mainly because my dosage of Alopurinol kept being increased.

I had a very difficult time getting used to it.

It is ok but I still feel achey now and then.

I go to the gym 4 times a week but I take it a lot easier than I used to.

Just do it to keep your self moving.

I take glucosamin and omega 3 fish oil and that helps enormously.

I seem to sleep very heavy and dream a lot now.

I definately dont sleep as well as I didd before Alopurinol

    All the best

yes I had side effects when I first started on alopurinol.

I ached really badly just abourt every where.

I started of on 50 then built up to 300 which is what I am on now.

Everytime I upped it I felt really bad. I had palpitationss as well when I was trying to get to sleep.

You do get used to it and I am much better now but I do have little bouts of that achey feeling.

You just have to hang in there.

    All the best

    Colchicine worked for me.

You have to take it untill you  feel very sick and nauseous. Took about 5 days but I cant remember the dose I took I think it was 4  a day

That finaly made me well enough to start taking alopurinol.

I can drink some beer now but only at weekends and in moderation.

You soon know when you have had too much you can feel it .

I can now tell my uric acid level is high without a test

I guess the question is, how long have you had gout? and is your uric acid controlled?

I have had gout for probably 10 years now. In the end I had constant attacks.

Had it for a long time without knowing what it was. Doctor thought I had sports injuries . Every blood test I had showed my uric acid level was ok untill one day when it was high.

He said the uric acid level was low during an attack

When he did finaly diagnose it he said I had chronic gout.

At that point I couldnt get a shoe on and could hardly walk.Even with a walking stick

Had a lot of time off work and I was very depressed.

Thats why I think about it every day

It has settled down now and I take Alopurinol 300. I have been on it for about 18 months now

Had a lot of trouble getting on Alopurinol because of my constant attacks.

Colchicine was the only thing that helped me.

I think if it wasnt for that drug I would still be trying to get on Alopurinol now.

My fear of it will hopefully go in time.

I wake up every morning wondering if I will be able to walk

    Hi

I had a miserable year with it.

It is only just settling down now.

Colchicine was the only thing that worked for me but I took for about 6 days.

I had to stop taking it it when I felt very sick .

My doctor was very reluctant to put me on it but it was the only thing that worked for me.

As for cherries and strawberrys they did nothing for me at all.As with all the other remedies.

Good luck but remember there is no quick fix

    Hi

you sound in the same state as me. Very depressing isnt it?

I took glucosamin 1500 mg for about 2 weeks and I had a severe bout of aching.

I stopped taking it in case it was that.

I am very active too. Workwise and I go to the gym.

I have not had any gout attacks for about a year now although I get little twinges and ache very badly sometimes. Mainly below the knees and around the waist.

yeh sometimes I get fluey type symptoms.

    Aching and feverish

I keep thinking of ways I can improve my lifestyle but I cant.

I eat reasonbly well dont drink much and go to the gym regularly.

I drink loads of water every day

I have recently thought I worked too hard in the gym and so I am cutting that down to 3/4 times a week of gentle excersise .

    Hi

    thanks for your reply

I dont take anything but alopurinol.

Touble is every discomfort I feel I blame on the Alopurinol.

    Perhaps its not that.

I had gout in my achillies tendon

Doctor told me it was very unusal but not impossible to get it there.

    The whole ankle locked up.

I had been on alopurinol for about 1 month at the time.

I had ultra sound and physio as I could hardly walk for about 2 months.

The most depressing time of my life

Now that makes me feel much better. Thank you.

I dont really want to up my alopurinol to 400 because I had great difficulty getting up to 300.

I started on 50 for a month then 100 for a month and so on.

Every time I increased the dose it made me feel so unwell.

I am settled now on 300 and I have to have a blood test this week or early next week

So I will see what the doctor says. If it is low enough I would like to stay here for a while

    Thanks for your reply

    Hi

My doctor has told me to take my alopurinol at night. 300mg.

Is this the best time to take it?

Wondered what the general opinion was

    Thanks

Its all or nothing with me.

I need to reduce my gym sessions .

I am sure I will be fine if I do that.

The feeling I get in my feet is not pain it is just a reminder of the pain I used to get.

I exersise regularly running cycling ect and I feel sure it starts an attack.

I exersise to lose weight but it is a vicious circle.

When ever I up the program I have problems.

I am on 300 mg Alopurinol every day I was on 200 for a long time and it was quite settled but I started doing more in the gym and 200 wasnt enough.

Now I find I am having gout like pains in my foot with out it being anywhere near as bad as it was.

It just reminds me of it.

I think my uric acid level must be high again so I am going to take it easier in the gym.

I am due another blood test in a week or so.

I really dont want to up the Alopurinol because I have a lot of problems when I increase the dose until I get used to it.
